Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 27th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Humane Society of Sarasota County is joining a statewide effort to save 2,000 shelter pets by waiving adoption fees at its facility at 2331 15th St. during a three-day event; the shelter is open today from noon—7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.—4 p.m. and all pets will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped for immediate adoption while animal groups from Palmetto and Port Charlotte also join the event.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The proposal calls for keeping the Van Wezel’s historic exterior—listing it on the National Register—while changing its interior to create a flexible venue that pairs with the new performing arts center. Tony Souza urges local officials and community groups to act boldly now to protect this cultural landmark and improve Bayfront safety.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Two Sarasota choral groups will merge to form an expanded Via Nova Chorale following the retirement of artistic director Joseph Holt. The new ensemble will expand to about 60 singers (half paid, half volunteer) and will hold auditions this summer (audition details to be announced).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Twin waterspouts appeared off the Bradenton coast late Sunday, capturing the attention of residents in Manatee and Sarasota counties as photos and videos emerged. The powerful funnels remained over the Gulf — they dissipated without causing damage and no warnings were issued.  Z105

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota County Public Works is clearing 180 miles of roadside ditches off Bell Avenue as contractors work ahead of hurricane season. Crews will jet clean 30 miles of pipe and place sod to stabilize the ditches (residents are reminded to control yard debris) to help prevent flooding.  FOX 13
  • At a public hearing on a proposed apartment complex on property owned by Temple Beth Sholom, the Sarasota Planning Board voted to recommend denial of Gilbane Development’s project after a heated debate over whether the affordable housing units truly meet residents’ needs. Board member Terrill Salem questioned the rents — $1,300 for one-bedroom, $1,500 for two-bedroom, and $1,700 for three-bedroom units — stating they do not serve Sarasota families.  Observer
