CRIME NEWS

  • Baltimore Orioles announced Tuesday night that 19-year-old minor league infielder Luis Guevara died when two jet skis collided head-on near Lido Key, sending all four riders into the water according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alan Dershowitz spoke on May 22 at New College’s Socratic Stage Dialogue Series and later delivered the 2025 commencement keynote, praising FIRE for its work on free speech while noting he did not know the college’s score. His remarks come amid criticism that President Corcoran has repeatedly undermined academic freedom—exemplified by the non-renewal of professor Erik Wallenberg’s contract.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Sarasota has applied for Resilient SRQ funds to support four flood mitigation projects costing $42 million, including $10 million to improve flooding issues at St. Armands Circle. County Public Works and the County Commission will decide which proposals move forward—efforts aimed at protecting local businesses and homes from repeated flood events.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • St. Regis Longboat Key has approached the Seaplace board to lease 50 parking spaces for three days a week in exchange for monetary compensation and hotel perks—board discussions started in February amid concerns from residents over safety, traffic, and liability. The proposed agreement is not finalized and will require approval from Seaplace owners along with contractual clauses to address these issues.  Observer

  • Kymistrii Young, a rising senior wide receiver at Cardinal Mooney Catholic, committed to Purdue University on June 1 after overcoming a lack of early football experience.
