Sarasota County offered a sandbag pickup on June 14 at three local locations (Ed Smith Stadium at 2700 12th St., Twin Lakes Park at 6700 Clark Road, and South County Fleet at 4571 Englewood Road, Venice) to help residents prepare for hurricane season and will offer more opportunities on July 19 and Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents must scoop the sand into the bags themselves with guidance from county helpers.

At its annual sports awards show, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune named the Venice High football team as Boys Team of the Year — a vote is open for the best high school boys team of the 2024-25 school year from Sarasota and Manatee counties, with the poll closing at 10 a.m. on June 20.
