Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 15th of June.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 45-year-old Nokomis woman riding her bicycle was fatally struck on June 13 at 9:51 p.m. on U.S. 41 near Pavonia Road when an SUV hit her as she improperly crossed the roadway — the 66-year-old driver from Minneapolis is cooperating with troopers and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A proposal will link New College, USF Sarasota-Manatee and Ringling Museum so that students and researchers can share resources—officials say the plan may help Sarasota attract talent and investment. Supporters believe the move will boost local education and cultural opportunities while strengthening the regional economy. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Port officials will review the 2025-26 budget on June 16-17, which drops a planned property tax cut after a May 13 referendum defeat and includes spending requests of up to $331.4 million with about $39.4 million from property taxes. The plan shows an 8.7% rise in taxable value and higher personnel costs, and officials are exploring new funding options for capital projects — including a police station and infrastructure improvements. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ Longboat Key town commission approved a one-time increase in its annual Chamber of Commerce contribution from $7,500 to $10,000 to help local businesses after hurricane losses—Mayor Ken Schneier made this suggestion when dues revenue fell. One-third of the funds will go to a membership relief fund and the rest will support a marketing campaign—commissioners voted 6-0 despite concerns about taxpayer money. Observer
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Sarasota Memorial Hospital was named among America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care by Newsweek, earning rankings in five specialty areas including cardiac, endocrine, neurological, orthopedic, and pulmonary care plus the recognition highlights its commitment to quality, patient-centered care. Observer

Osprey Ave that will use the city bonus program and include a pool deck, fitness center and meeting rooms.
