  • Hermione E. Gilpin, chief development officer for the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, urged residents to speak up against antisemitism after local hateful flyers and recent violence elsewhere raised fears for the community—she called for everyone to support their Jewish neighbors and build unity.   • Temple Sinai's early childhood education director Laura Freedman was honored with the Person of Valor Award from Early Childhood Educators of Reform Judaism for her innovative leadership during the 2024 hurricanes when she quickly moved classes to a safe facility at the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida and was selected as one of 200 professionals for her dedication.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Venice City Council nominated a 2.4-acre parcel on Pinebrook Road for potential county park acquisition and approved placing speed cameras at Venice High School and Epiphany Cathedral School, following citizen panel recommendations and unanimous votes. The cameras will operate 30 minutes before and after school with a 30-day warning period — steps meant to improve local safety.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jan Egri leads a local mahjong group that held a downtown tournament to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s, drawing players from across the country to support those battling the disease. Melissa McCoy shared her story of caring for her husband and stressed that community support and the Alzheimer’s Association helpline—available 24/7—are vital for keeping dignity and independence.  ABC 7

  • At the Sarasota-Manatee High School Sports Awards held May 30 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, readers voted Cardinal Mooney Catholic’s 6-foot-1 volleyball player Riley Greene as Girls Athlete of the Year with 51.36% of the vote—she led her team with 169 kills and strong defensive numbers.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
