COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from Manasota Track Club held a community cleanup near Overlook Park on June 7 at 8 a.m.—they spotted a manatee offshore. Club president Rob Loeffler invites everyone to join future efforts to keep the area clean.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local muralist Kaitlyn Ramirez, known as Swirly Painter, finished a 1,700-square-foot mural honoring pioneers Irene and Lewis Colson on the Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences building as part of the city's Call for Walls program—she worked about 170 hours on the piece. A dedication ceremony is planned later this year—official plans will be announced soon.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Artist Patricia Pettit turned old cardboard into art by weaving and rolling it into patterns like her Medusa piece—drawing on skills from her work as a furniture maker. She found inspiration in the textures and shapes of everyday materials.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 12th — Pulse Remembrance Day — state and local government buildings flew flags at half-staff from sunrise until sunset to honor the victims of the Pulse nightclub tragedy. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a memorandum ordering the gesture as a mark of respect for those affected by the attack.  Z105
  • Venice City Council approved an $11.8 million purchase of 4.7 acres on U.S. 41 Bypass to move the city’s solid waste, recycling and fleet maintenance operations from the Seaboard District so mixed-use redevelopment can begin, with the deal expected to close in September and operations moving by the end of the year — saving $6 million compared to building a new facility. City officials said funding comes from sales tax, impact fees and bonds while they will spend an additional $1 million to update the facility.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Travel + Leisure has named Siesta Beach as the best beach in the U.S. and ranked it 42nd among the world’s top 50 beaches, citing its soft quartz sand and clear, calm water that help keep the area nearly pristine.  Observer

  • Thousands of top youth rowers have gathered at Nathan Benderson park for the US Rowing Youth National Championship, which began Thursday and will run through Sunday—drawing athletes from over 4,000 high school clubs and boosting local tourism.  FOX 13
  • Sarasota High volleyball coach Emma Thrift, a former Riverview player, is building a new team culture and aims to improve the Sailors’ season—she held her first summer workout on June 9 and plans to boost players’ stamina and unity in preparation for fall play.  Observer
