- ➤ The Sarasota Boxing Club marked its 40th anniversary today and remains a safe haven for at-risk youngsters as director Harold Wilen, who started the club at 40 and will soon turn 80, leads its mission to keep classic boxing alive—local boxer Michael Campbell praises the club’s enduring structure that motivates athletes. The club has been a community staple since 1985, continuing to offer a disciplined environment for young people to learn the sport. ABC 7
- ➤ Foundation for Dreams received a $100,000 grant from the Bishop-Parker Foundation — the funds will be used to renovate a cottage at its campus near Rye Preserve. The project is underway — the work will improve accessibility and expand services at Dream Oaks Camp for children with special needs. Observer
- ➤ Jeff Toale became president of the board of the Lakewood Ranch Community Foundation on June 1 and will serve for one year as he focuses on boosting donation opportunities and streamlining operations while planning events like the Soiree on the Ranch Grand Finale on Nov 13. Observer

- ➤ From June 2 to 6, Junior Ranchers Camp at Lakewood Ranch High School taught children hands-on agriculture lessons as they milked cows, handled snakes and insects, and worked in teams. Counselors and guest speakers guided the campers to understand plant, animal and environmental science and where their food and natural resources come from. Observer
- ➤ Sarasota High School graduate Jacob Kalua from Lido Key earned a scholarship (from Take Stock in Children) after hurricanes Helene and Milton displaced his family for nearly four months during his senior year. He now will attend the State College of Florida (where he plans to major in hospitality) and start a new chapter in his education. Observer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Longboat Key town commissioners unanimously approved an 80—20 funding method that will combine ad valorem and non-ad valorem taxes to support the canal dredging program, with initial costs estimated at about $9.25 million over the first 5 years. Town staff will refine details and consider a bridge loan after the summer recess to jumpstart the project if needed. Observer
- ➤ At its June 3 meeting, the Sarasota County Commission unanimously approved a 120-day extension of its contract with the Economic Development Corp. to clear up unclear language for fiscal year 2026. The extension does not affect the current spending plan of $1.82 million as the agreement was set to expire on Sept. 30 — officials said. Observer
- ➤ Gov. Ron DeSantis signed five bills on June 10 to protect children from sexual exploitation—Brooke’s Law now requires online platforms to remove deepfake content within 48 hours, while tougher penalties for luring children and enhanced reporting for sexual predators will take effect on Oct. 1. The new laws also impose mandatory minimum sentences for repeat sexual offenders and create a capital offense for human trafficking of vulnerable persons. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
