- ➤ The Community Foundation of Sarasota County awarded $1,050,046 through its Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund to 17 nonprofits that help local residents impacted by —Hurricanes Ian, Debby, Helene and Milton—. - ➤ Local Riverview High graduate Branson Rudeen started a healthy vending machine business with his father by placing machines in Lakewood Ranch High School and Bayshore High School that offer snacks meeting Smart Snacks standards; the venture has made over $400 in daily sales at one location and plans to expand to more schools. - ➤ Longboat Key Turtle Watch hosts free turtle walks through June and July to teach community members about sea turtles and their nesting habits. The first walk is at 6:45 a.m. this Saturday at the public beach access point on 4795 Gulf of Mexico Drive—participants must have an adult with them—for all age groups. Observer
- ➤ Today, weather experts say no tropical depression is forming despite online rumors while beneficial rains bring two to four inches to South Florida & half to one inch to Central Florida; forecasters expect thunderstorms for the next day or two with chances dropping later this week. - ➤ Starting July 1, anyone aged 15-17 will need to complete a certified driver education course to get a learner permit after Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 994. - ➤ From May 19 to May 23, top home sales in Sarasota included a Lewis Combs home on Hawthorne Street and a two-property deal in Mira Mar Beach that both sold for $3 million—marking the week’s highest deals—and other sales in Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, Osprey and Nokomis ranged from about $525,000 to over $2 million.
