COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longboat Island Chapel in Longboat Key operates a free medical supply closet where donated items like wheelchairs and rollators are provided for residents who need them for as long as required—volunteers clean the equipment and sometimes work with North Hillsborough Baptist Church to secure additional supplies.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ringling will host the Summer Circus Spectacular at its Historic Asolo Theater from June 13 to Aug. 9—produced by Pedro Reis, the show features international acts such as Trio Black Diamond, America’s Got Talent finalist Aidan Brant, speed juggler Nilson Escobar, and clown Juan Carlos Valencia in an intimate 286-seat setting.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Save Our Seabirds updated its grounds when staff and volunteers cleared overgrown foliage to reveal a faded bird mural that was repainted during Memorial Day weekend—restoring its bright colors and preserving the artist’s signature. The organization is now building five new aviaries for songbirds and nonnative birds and plans to add twin disappearing waterfalls later this year.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners approved a new fare package for Breeze OnDemand rides that will begin July 1 with a $3 base fare for the first three miles and additional companion fees, while a proposal to offer free rides for passengers 80-and-older will be revisited in 2026 after collecting ride data for 12 months. Over 100 public comments were submitted as officials weigh the budget impacts and traffic safety concerns of the new system.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study ranked Florida last for aging in place, showing that older residents struggle with care as the state has only one aide for every 56 seniors and high housing costs force 30% of homeowners over 65 to spend over 30% of their income on housing. The report also links weather hazards to these challenges—factors that could affect Florida's appeal as a retirement destination.  FOX 13

  • In July, the Cary Cohenour Tennis Foundation will open a new facility at the Boys & Girls Club at 3100 Fruitville Road — a site that will host four USTA-quality courts for youth tennis training. Celsius Tennis Academy will also offer scholarships and equipment to keep his coaching legacy alive — ensuring that local children can continue to learn and grow in the sport.  Observer
  • East County has named its spring prep sports players of the year after teams fought injuries and tough schedules to reach deep postseason runs — standout honorees include Braden River senior Nick Curbelo in baseball and Lakewood Ranch senior Amy Zeitler in flag football. Additional awards went to athletes in softball, beach volleyball, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, and weightlifting, reflecting a season marked by determination.  Observer
