- ➤ After Sunday's 11 a.m. service, First United Methodist Church in Sarasota helped churchgoers fill Buckets of Hope with storm preparation supplies for residents in need. The missions team purchased all items and aims for 100 buckets—supplies like detergent, insect repellent and cleaning wipes—to be stored at the church for immediate distribution following a storm. - ➤ Simply Jo's Boutique, which opened in November 2023 on upper Main Street, offers Sarasota residents coastal-inspired fashion with designer pieces chosen for their breathable, lightweight fabrics—owner Joanna Brewer left her nurse practitioner career to create a shop serving all ages. - ➤ The final round of the National Vocal Competition for high school singers took place at 1pm Sunday at the Sarasota Opera House—16 teenagers from Florida and around the country were judged by renowned vocal coaches. ABC7 covered the event. ABC 7
- ➤ Former NASA astronaut Mary Cleave, known for her two shuttle missions and nearly 11 days in space, was laid to rest in the Gulf in March when her ashes were mixed with concrete and cast in a reef ball off Sarasota—fulfilling her wish to return to the sea. Her burial ceremony included family members and other loved ones, and she was commemorated alongside her Jack Russell Terrier, Abby, who had passed away one month earlier. Sarasota Magazine

- ➤ The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and will continue until Nov. 30, with activity peaking from mid-August to mid-October. NOAA forecasts 13 to 19 named storms and 6 to 10 hurricanes, and officials urge residents to check evacuation zones and prepare an emergency kit (steps advised by local authorities) to stay safe.
