  • Around 30 people gathered outside Sarasota Bradenton International Airport today to protest Avelo Airlines’ contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement—claiming the agreement leads to deportation flights and jeopardizes immigrant rights.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Westcoast Black Theatre is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Stage of Discovery, its free, audition-based summer musical theater intensive for youths aged 11 to 18 that will run from June 9 to July 13 — finishing with two public musical performances on July 12 and 13 at 1012 N.   • After nearly 20 years with the Nashville Symphony, Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero (award-winning conductor) announced plans to lead the Sarasota Orchestra as its new music director.   • Longboat Key officials say the 2025 hurricane season starts today with a 60% chance of an above-average season, as NOAA forecasts 13 to 19 storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes, and 3 to 5 major hurricanes while the Climate Adaptation Center predicts 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and 5 major storms. The town is holding disaster preparedness seminars and urging residents to have evacuation plans, secure essentials and move vehicles to higher ground—steps meant to protect homes and families.  Observer
  • Today, early morning storms bring a 40% chance of rain to Sarasota and Charlotte Counties before most clear by late morning, though isolated showers may appear in the afternoon. A decaying front will keep a steady chance of rain throughout the week while temperatures rise from the upper 80s to low 90s—reminding residents that hurricane season has begun and urging them to prepare.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, North Port hosted an expo to teach hurricane preparedness—offering clear advice on evacuation routes, securing homes, and signing up for alerts. City officials stressed that planning ahead helps reduce stress when storms hit.  ABC 7
  • FPL urged Sarasota residents to update their hurricane plans today as the season begins, noting that recent upgrades to the power grid—such as burying power lines—will help restore service faster after storms.  Z105

HEALTH NEWS

  • Primary care doctors in First Physicians Group, affiliated with Sarasota Memorial—will be out-of-network for Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans starting July 1, affecting approximately 3,800 patients.
