  • Mary Butler, a longtime Newtown resident and steering committee member, urged local donors to support the planned Newtown Family Center, which will offer vital resources to families still recovering from severe storms and economic challenges. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 12-year-old Port Charlotte girl riding a motorized scooter was seriously injured Thursday at about 5 p.m. when she entered an intersection and collided with a Honda sedan driven by 64-year-old Arlin Magali Monroy Salazar—who was arrested for driving without a license as the investigation continues.  ABC 7
  • A major crash involving a tractor trailer and a red car blocked eastbound Fruitville Road just past Sarasota Center Blvd on May 30 + westbound lanes were partly closed with backups reaching up to 2 miles, prompting drivers to use alternate routes.  ABC 7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • SRQ has grown into a busy travel hub after opening a 75,300-square-foot terminal addition with a four-lane security checkpoint and five boarding gates leased by Allegiant Air — part of a $115 million expansion that began in March 2023. Passenger numbers have climbed steeply since 2018 and the airport now employs over 23,000 workers — with plans to serve up to 8 million passengers by 2050.  Sarasota Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on South Osprey Avenue south of downtown will face lane closures as the city begins replacing aging sewer lines on June 3 and work continues with restrictions through early July. The project is the first phase in a $300 million master plan—designed to update infrastructure and boost system resilience—with full completion expected in fall.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital was named among America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care by Newsweek after it ranked in five areas including cardiac, endocrine, neurological, orthopedic, and pulmonary care. It is the only Southwest Florida hospital among the 20 Florida hospitals on the list.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital surgeons are using Ceevra’s AI-powered 3D imaging tool to turn CT and MRI scans into interactive 3D models—this tool helps plan lung cancer surgeries with precision. Dr. M. Blair Marshall, who first used the technology on the Gulf Coast, is now training other surgeons to improve patient outcomes.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
