- ➤ Isabel Norton, a respected community leader who guided local library and Girl Scout efforts + helped set rules for public meetings, died May 22 at 86. She is remembered for raising millions for local causes and for a gentle spirit that touched many lives in Sarasota. Observer
- ➤ Hexrock, Sarasota’s first climbing gym and community hub, will open to the public on Saturday, June 6 — the 24,000 sqft facility offers climbing, podcasting, a coffee bar and diverse programs including youth camps and events for older adults. Sarasota Magazine
- ➤ ABC7 released a new hurricane guide for Suncoast families on Wednesday, May 27. The guide gives clear steps for protecting homes and gathering emergency supplies to help residents prepare for hurricanes. ABC 7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students in Sarasota ended their 2025-2026 school year on May 27 while six other counties did the same. Across Florida, most districts will start classes on Aug. 10 as some counties wrap up the school season later. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Vermont banned the toxic herbicide paraquat, citing potential links to Parkinson’s disease, and set a transition to a full phase-out by December. Florida restricts paraquat use to licensed applicators through regular training, leaving open whether local measures may eventually tighten regulations. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ Today, the National Hurricane Center’s tropical outlook shows no disturbances in the Atlantic for the next two to seven days. Hurricane season starts June 1, so Florida residents should prepare (even if predictions point to a below-average season). Sarasota Herald-Tribune
