CULTURE NEWS

  • Sarasota has a busy June with Fresh Fridays on June 5 at North Palm Avenue, a Guitar & Amp Show on June 6-7 at Robarts Arena, and Dad's Day Block Party on June 6, plus events at the Ringling and a Vince Gill show at Van Wezel on June 26.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USF Sarasota-Manatee will be transferred to New College pending state budget approval on Friday, May 29. New College will assume existing liabilities and leases while community leaders call for a transparent plan to maintain classroom access for current students.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Six Sarasota teachers were honored as spring winners of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation's Ripple Effect Teacher Award, each earning $5,000 for their strong impact on students. Superintendent Terry Connor praised their dedication as a boost to the local education community.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city completed a $12M Lido Beach renourishment project that restored 1.2 miles of eroded shoreline by placing 300,000 cubic yards of sand through a partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers + residents attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday at Lido Beach Pavilion.  FOX 13
  • The National Hurricane Center warned that although El Niño may lower storm counts, warm Gulf waters could fuel dangerous hurricanes. Sarasota residents should verify evacuation zones (updated forecast maps now show inland warnings) and stay alert as early-season storms may develop along warm Gulf fronts.  Z105

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Sarasota sports landmark is set for a comeback as Bath and Racquet Residences and Club redevelops on the site of the former Bath and Racquet Club. The project broke ground last spring and will open its phase one with condos, tennis courts + a wellness center in mid summer.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • The Artscape project, a new workforce housing initiative for artists, will create 75 apartments with rents from $1,100 to $1,450 in downtown Sarasota at 2309-2329 N. Tamiami Trail.   • At The Herald-Tribune High School Sports Awards held May 26 at The Ora Ballroom, Sarasota swimmer Bogdan Zverev was named Boys' Athlete of the Year and Venice's Atarah Robinson won Girls' Athlete of the Year among 34 honors for top local athletes.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
