ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium released 28,000 juvenile snook into Sarasota County estuaries over an eight-day period, more than doubling their previous record—researchers used genetic tagging to track the lineage of the fish. The snook were raised at Mote Aquaculture Research Park from a single spawn and helped support efforts to bolster Florida’s recreational fishing industry and recover from recent environmental challenges.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • The EPA approved a modified permit on May 15 for Ocean Era’s offshore project to raise up to 55,000 pounds of redfish off Sarasota; the changes lower fish capacity, switch from Almaco jack to redfish, and update the net and anchor system — environmental groups have 30 days to challenge the decision amid concerns about fish waste and wild fish safety. The one-year demonstration project is set in federal waters between Venice and Englewood and plans to stock 20,000 fish pending final permits — Ocean Era is still finalizing its plans.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longboat Key Fire Department plans to buy a new rescue boat in FY26 with a $270,000 matched grant if the town commission approves the budget—if ordered in October, the Seattle-made boat is expected to be delivered about eight months later. • Sarasota County approved on May 20 a $1.3 million purchase of 105 feet of bayfront in Englewood next to Indian Mound Park and will demolish the hurricane-damaged house on the site to improve public fishing, birding and water access.
