COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gold Star families gathered Sunday at Sarasota National Cemetery to honor 25 service members by reading the names of 38 fallen heroes — ensuring their sacrifice is remembered. Kim Hayes and veteran family members led the tribute in a solemn ceremony that kept the heroes’ memory alive.  ABC 7
  • Yesterday, the 28th annual Thunder by the Bay Music & Motors Festival raised $310,000 to benefit local children, teens and adults with special needs, featuring headliners Night Ranger, 38 Special and Montgomery Gentry. The festival will return Feb. 19–21.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Residents at The Dock on the Bay on Longboat Key rebuilt docks damaged in 2024 storms and plan to add six boat slips next month after DEP approval. The condo will also launch a million-dollar project to upgrade athletic courts and pool areas as its recovery continues.  Observer

  • Krispy Kreme faces a $1.6 million settlement for a data breach that exposed personal information in November 2024 (Florida residents who received a notice can file a claim by June 22 to get $75 or up to $3,500 for documented losses).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • During Memorial Day weekend, the St. Armands Fine Art Festival turned St. Armands Circle into an outdoor gallery where visitors connected with artists from Florida + the United States. The free event showcased original works and a Patriotic Pops drone light show finale by the Venice Symphony.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New College of Florida held its commencement on Friday, May 22 at the Charles Ringling Mansion where 202 graduates celebrated under a tent with water, lemonade and cookies provided at 2:00 p.m. Keynote speaker Nik Wallenda, the King of the Wire, addressed the crowd.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • More than 1,300 runners and community partners joined the third annual Ringling Bridge Run at The Bay Park on May 24 to support local students and teachers. Lexus Sarasota & other sponsors made the event possible.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • The Anna Maria Oyster Bar’s Dive Into Reading program is seeking volunteers at 16 Title 1 schools as sessions run Tuesday-Thursday, 8:30-10:45 a.m. from June 2 to June 25 (virtual training on May 30 and 31). HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Memorial Day, Suncoast veterans Nick and Eric Frick use wrestling to help fellow veterans recover—an approach that eased their post-combat challenges—through their academy. They plan to raise funds for a building to serve veterans and youth via the War Memorial Foundation Corporation.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The former Sarasota Lanes site at 2250 Fruitville Road is set to host 46 townhomes after the city’s Development Review Committee gave (partial signoff) on the project. The development will replace the long-time bowling alley that was damaged during the 2024 hurricane season.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
