  • Wayne Bundy, a Siesta Key resident, raises and lowers the American flag each day except Sunday at Beach Access 2 to honor military service members and keep a 40-year tradition alive. The ceremony happens at sunrise and sunset and draws 50 to 200 people—demonstrating his steadfast commitment rain or shine unless lightning makes it unsafe.  Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Euphemia Haye, a long-time restaurant on Longboat Key, will reopen today at 5 p.m. under new owners Jason and Rachel Ghormley while keeping its classic menu and familiar team. The reopening—after a month-long closure—ensures guests enjoy the same signature dishes and in-house desserts they have loved for decades.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • A 23-year-old Sarasota man was arrested after an alleged DUI hit-and-run that critically injured a 61-year-old bicyclist crossing Bahia Vista Street at Kaufman Avenue just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, and he faces charges (felony fleeing the scene with serious injury, reckless driving, DUI with drugs-marijuana, and no operator’s license) while a 16-year-old passenger fled on foot.  ABC 7
  • Sarasota County firefighter Ryan J. Hagenbuch is accused of taking $200 from a man's wallet during a call at Nokomis Inn and Suites on Hummingbird Avenue and he resigned before his court appearance scheduled for Thursday afternoon.  ABC 7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has started an eight-day mission to release 28,000 juvenile snook in estuaries across Sarasota County, marking the largest single release in its fisheries enhancement history. Mote scientists will use genetic tagging techniques to track the fish and support native sportfish recovery.  ABC 7
  • NOAA live streamed its prediction for the 2025 hurricane season this morning, May22 at 11 a.m. ET—setting the stage for weather preparations ahead of the season starting June 1—and experts from Colorado State University and AccuWeather have predicted an above-average season.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newtown Gateway plans to develop a city-owned 13-acre site in Newtown by creating a medical clinic on the northern parcel and light industrial space on the southern parcel (the latter needs a rezoning amendment). The process will finish after the buyer completes environmental remediation and staff reviews the amendments (which may lead to separate closings), and the city will sell the property for $50,000 following delays from the 2024 hurricanes.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a tough loss to Venice and a sharp internal conflict, the Sarasota High softball team regrouped in a team meeting and won three regional games to earn their first state Final Four appearance in 10 years. They will play a state semifinal game today against 21-4 Wellington — a true test of their renewed spirit.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
