- ➤ At State College of Florida, singers Joshua Ogline and Julianna Lugo won top prizes at singing auditions while other students earned $1,000 tuition waivers at a music symposium and cash prizes were given at the fourth annual PianoPalooza—adding a busy spring to the music program. Meanwhile, teams from Willis Elementary, Johnson K-8 and Manatee High won the Battle of the Books, a long jumper from Manatee High excelled at state and 106-year-old World War II veteran John Skeen was honored by the French Consulate. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Steffany Quintana, 24, had a stroke on April 18 that left her unable to walk, talk or swallow and she spent a week in the ICU before moving to Encompass Heath Rehabilitation Hospital for recovery. Her treatment uses a robotic treadmill—AutoAmbulator—to help her regain strength and fine motor skills as she works on controlling her emotions. Observer
- ➤ Community volunteers have shaped Sarasota Memorial Hospital since the 1920s when they helped build the first modern hospital, and today 720 active volunteers have contributed 120,000 hours of service in areas like blood deliveries and patient support—helping the hospital remain compassionate and community-minded.
