  • About 100 golfers played on Saturday, May 16 in Lakewood Ranch at the inaugural Valdez Veterans Services Golf Tournament, a fundraiser to support local veterans outreach and advocacy programs. The event brought together veterans, community leaders & supporters to honor military service.  ABC 7
  • Jeff Toale, vice president at Robert Toale & Sons, now leads the Lakewood Ranch Community Foundation and plans to double last year's $125,000 giving goal to $250,000 this year — adding volunteer programs and new services that support local nonprofits.  Observer
  • All Faiths Food Bank launched Margie’s Market in Newtown to bring fresh, culturally selected foods to a community long without a full-service grocery store; the one-year pilot operates Tuesday through Saturday with extended hours based on local feedback to help residents shop with dignity.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Four bronze bells, crafted in Italy, were blessed and named by Bishop Frank J. Dewane on Friday at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. They will be installed within a new 75-foot bell tower in the coming months, marking a lasting symbol of faith for the community.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Riverview High School held its graduation ceremony Saturday morning, May 16 at Robarts Arena where 627 graduates received their diplomas from local administrators.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Venice Baseball beat Vero Beach 4-2 on Friday at Lee Health Sports Complex, advancing to the Class 7A State Championship game set for Saturday at 5 p.m.—the team will now face Stoneman Douglas as it chases a seventh state title.  ABC 7
