  • This weekend, Sarasota hosts the inaugural Siesta 7s Beach Rugby Tournament at Siesta Beach on Saturday, following a Friday party at Daiquiri Deck in South Siesta Key and a Saturday bar crawl in Siesta Key Village. Fireworks and ReptiCon at Sahib Shrine Center round out the lineup.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sisterhood for Good hosted its annual Grant Expo on May 11 at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, where 23 nonprofits out of 129 applicants showcased programs addressing local needs+community support, and will award $150,000 in grants on June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the same venue.  Observer

  • The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce announced the finalists for the 36th annual Sarasota Business Awards on May 14; the event will take place on June 26 from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at The Ora (578 McIntosh Road) and honors local businesses across 10 award categories.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Wendy Lee Goldberg closed on a tract of land at the northwest corner of Fruitville Road and Briggs Court as she plans to move her longtime restaurant, The Breakfast House, into a new retail village east of downtown. The owner called the property her dream location.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Bishop-elect Emilio Biosca Agüero will lead the Diocese of Venice with over 250,000 Catholics (including many Hispanics) after Bishop Frank J. Dewane retires. He spoke Wednesday, May 13 at a joint press conference.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A proposal suggests transferring the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus to New College to support local growth—while all current USF students can complete their programs and key workforce courses remain intact. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Sarasota will present three conceptual design options for Main Street at a public meeting on May 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Selby Public Library - Jack J. Geldbart Auditorium. Residents can share feedback to shape a walkable, safe downtown corridor.  Sarasota Magazine

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarasota County launched a malaria surveillance program at its new 19,600 sqft Mosquito Management facility in Nokomis (designed to shift the approach from reactive measures to prevention against mosquito-borne illnesses).  Sarasota Magazine

  • On Thursday, May 14, the Lakewood Ranch Mustangs defeated the Bayshore Bruins 21-0 in a spring exhibition at Balvanz Stadium — quarterback Sebastian Engel threw three touchdown passes.
