  • Bishop Frank J. Dewane retired after nearly 20 years of service at the Diocese of Venice, and Pope Leo XIV named Rev. Emilio Biosca Agüero as his successor + Dewane will be honored as Bishop Emeritus.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County hosted its second summit (May 11) at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. Speakers and local artists explained how the arts boost health, the economy, and community well-being.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Longboat Key owner Gary Hagen of Elegant Lady Cheesecake Parlor has published his first book, Romancing Hollywood, a humorous look at classic film stars set against his shop's unique backdrop. Signed copies come with two complimentary donuts — a nod to his recovery after recent hurricane flooding.  Observer
  • Two local arts groups have partnered to present 'Music for New Bodies' by Matthew Aucoin at the Sarasota Opera House on May 22, an immersive opera that brings together Sarasota Orchestra alumni and celebrated creative talent (including director Peter Sellars and concertmaster Daniel Jordan).  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school seniors are set to deliver graduation speeches at Bradenton River High today and at Lakewood Ranch High on May 18. Speakers like Chloe Pogoda and others will share personal stories on overcoming challenges and preparing for future studies.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Research shows that strong El Niño years bring fewer hurricane landfalls to Florida, though storms like Hurricane Idalia still have threatened the coast; the Climate Prediction Center will update its forecast today.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Thirty years after the Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act was passed, enforcement still depends on citizen reporting. Local groups & Sarasota County are working to educate the public, track canopy health, and address unauthorized trimming to protect our coastal ecosystem.  Observer

  • Airport Circle at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has been renamed Rick Piccolo Circle to honor former president and CEO Rick Piccolo (who led the airport for three decades). New signage is active on mapping services for traveler navigation.  Observer

  • Sarasota High softball team was named April’s Herald-Tribune Top Team after winning 72% of the vote — they posted a 20-5 record and claimed the District 7A-12 title. More details on next month’s nominees will be online early May.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Local rower Sophie Bell, a Lakewood Ranch High alum and current Old Dominion crew athlete, will race at the Big 12 Championships at Nathan Benderson Park May 16-17. She returns to familiar local waters & intense competition honed during years with Sarasota Crew.  Observer
