- ➤ On May 8, Sarasota County held a community conversation at Riverview High School where local and federal officials discussed new hurricane alert protocols, upgrades to disaster supply storage, and insurance options as hurricane season starts on June 1. Officials explained that advisories now come 72 hours early and urged residents to ready themselves for flood and storm risks + take necessary protective measures. Observer

- ➤ Bella Vita Italian Kitchen opened at 501 N. Beneva Road #250 in Town & Country Plaza — replacing the former New York Slice Company space — and now serves a Famous Meatball Bowl with Italian dishes and wines. Owner Rocco Mosca, formerly from a Bradenton restaurant, said the eatery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ Peachey’s Baking Co. opened its first brick-and-mortar store at The Landings on May 10th when crowds formed around the Publix entrance for free doughnuts—marking its move from a seasonal food truck to a year-round service. The shop now serves warm yeasted doughnuts, salt-dusted pretzels, and drip coffee Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sarasota Magazine
- ➤ Louise Converse, owner of Artisan Cheese Company (a 13-year business in downtown Sarasota), said her shop will close May 30 due to rising tariffs, inflation, and staffing shortages. - ➤ Max Tan, a Sarasota Orchestra member and cultural entrepreneur, has planned the second Suncoast Composer Fellowship Program to run from May 16—21 and feature over 15 public events at locations including Selby Library, Holley Hall, and St. Boniface Episcopal Church. The program will include seminars, masterclasses, concerts, tours, and parties with some sessions available via webinar and a Sarasota premiere of 'Carnival de las Indias' on May 20. Observer

- ➤ High school graduations in Sarasota and Manatee counties are scheduled from May 12 through the end of May, and photo galleries are posted the day after each ceremony — each school has a set date for its gallery. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Manatee County and Longboat Key officials met on May 7 in Bradenton to discuss projects that include updates to the Longboat Pass Bridge, easing traffic congestion, and improvements at the Broadway Roundabout. Town staff also presented beach nourishment plans that will seek funding and further studies in fiscal year 2026. Observer
- ➤ City commissioners held a special appeal meeting on Tuesday to hear residents oppose the Obsidian Tower rebranded as 1260 North Palm Residences, the planned tallest building in Sarasota at 327 feet. Dozens raised concerns about the building's small lot and 14-unit design while a final decision remains pending. ABC 7
