  • Siesta Key Watersports, a longtime waterfront business, will move to 5253 S. Tamiami Trail on May 15 after its forced exit from Boatyard Village as the county finalizes an $18.1 million purchase for a new park; the company will shuttle customers via boat for its dolphin tours.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Sarasota artist Vladislav Yeliseyev published a 160-page watercolor book in February and will host an open house at his gated studio in The Landings on May 16 for registered visitors.  Observer
  • The Ringling Museum of Art announced its Art of Performance 2026 to 2027 lineup starting with José Pepito Gomez's kickoff on Oct. 16 and Grammy-nominated Valerie June on Dec. 18; the season includes multimedia and circus acts ending April 30.  Sarasota Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 with daily tropical outlooks starting May 15 to help residents check evacuation zones and prepare storm kits, as Florida has seen three Category 5 hurricanes since 1900.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Florida has expanded red snapper seasons for both Gulf and Atlantic waters in 2026, with the Atlantic season lasting 39 days and the Gulf season a record 140 days. Anglers can begin fishing under new rules on May 22, though conservation groups express concerns.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Legislators will decide during a special budget session whether to shut down USF Sarasota-Manatee and transfer its buildings to New College beginning July 1. Community members, students and business leaders oppose the move — they call for keeping the campus open.  Observer

  • County commissioners cut the ribbon on a state-of-the-art mosquito management facility near Nakomis yesterday that expands research capabilities & community outreach, including the nation’s first malaria surveillance program.   • Sarasota County's Stickney Point Road waterfront project (along the intercoastal) currently lacks plans for a restaurant, leaving dining options limited to vending services.
