  • Live blues music from Bluestar and inflatable games filled Main Street during Music on Main in Lakewood Ranch as residents danced and enjoyed a family day out. Vendors offered food and activities like skee-ball and basketball — the event connected neighborhoods with a festive spirit.  Observer
  • Corvette fans gathered for the 26th annual car show at St. Armands Circle on Saturday after last year’s cancellation because of parking issues with the city—attendees shared their vehicles and raised funds for Honor Flight of West Central Florida to help veterans. Winners in the Best of Show and top car categories were honored as many admired unique models including one that was featured in a movie.  Observer

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A deadly truck crash on I-75 northbound near Laurel Road blocked all lanes and resulted in at least one death while causing a two-mile backup and nearly 20 minutes of delay—Florida Highway Patrol said conditions remain dangerous.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for suspect Trae B. Ward in connection with the deadly shooting that happened last week at the 2500 Block of Colson Avenue—45-year-old Reginald Graves died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ukrainian artist Alena Grom won the People’s Choice award from Embracing Our Differences for her photograph Stolen Spring that shows a woman amid Bucha’s ruined buildings and blooming cherry trees. Over 382,240 visitors voted during exhibitions in Sarasota from Jan. 19 to April 13 and in St. Petersburg from March 1 to 31 — earning her a $2,000 cash prize that honors hope and survival.  Sarasota Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Preparedness Week provided tips on May 5 for residents to ready their homes and gather disaster supplies—advice issued by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center. Early preparations were stressed as hurricane season begins June 1—prompting residents to review evacuation plans and insurance details.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • C.J. Czaia, co-founder of UnidosNow, said immigrant families in Sarasota feel fear amid new law requiring local law enforcement to enforce immigration rules and the ongoing federal crackdown—he urged fair treatment and better education to support the community.  Sarasota Magazine
  • North Port will hold a special election on May 13 where voters will decide yes or no on five issues. Early voting is available by mail or in person at the supervisor of elections office—13640 Tamiami Trail Biscayne Plaza from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 10.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marcus Walfridson, owner of Sarasota Paradise, built the team to unite the community and moved home games from Sarasota High to Lakewood Ranch’s Premier Sports Campus, which now seats 3,000 fans. The team will join USL League One next year and plans to add a local women’s team—Walfridson invites fans to cheer with a resounding ‘We are Paradise!’  Sarasota Magazine
