COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Sarasota will be able to watch the ETA Aquarids meteor shower as it peaks between May 5 and May 6—best seen from midnight to dawn when clear skies could reveal up to 50 meteors per hour.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • A local environmental group will host an Oyster Rag Pot Shindig on May 22 at Palma Sola Botanical Park to raise funds for oyster restoration in the Manatee River while a Service Academy Fair for high school students is set for May 17 at the Goodwill Manasota Corporate Office in Bradenton. In other news, Oaks Women’s Club awarded scholarships to 16 county high school graduates, Sarasota Lions Club named three college scholarship winners to receive awards at a May 23 dinner and local programs include a free youth golf initiative, a debut novel launch and Literacy Council tutor training workshops.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • The Longboat Key Garden Club is set to renovate Bicentennial Park before July 4 – they raised funds through Taste of the Keys, Arts in April, and other events. Club members and Public Works officials planned to replant the Butterfly Garden with native plants and add new garden beds to help the park recover from past hurricanes.  Observer

  • Peachey’s Baking Co. will open its first brick-and-mortar shop at The Landings in Sarasota on May 10 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the business, known for its popular donut food truck, will sell donuts, pretzels and coffee Tuesday to Saturday.  Observer

CRIME NEWS

  • Sarasota County deputies said Reginald Graves died during an altercation on Thursday night near 2500 Colson Ave—officials urge anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at 941-861-4900.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sea of Strengths Academy in Lakewood Ranch got an $8,700 grant from the Lakewood Ranch Community Foundation to fix its broken playground and add a garden after Hurricane Milton. Parent Kelly Gonzalez — who wrote about 30 grant applications — helped secure the funds for the school's needed improvements.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Storms in 2024 reopened Midnight Pass as a tidal connection between Little Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This change linked Siesta Key and Casey Key—separated since 1983 when the pass was closed as part of the Intracoastal Waterway project.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for potato chips imported from Colombia that contain pork cracklings—products that should not be eaten since Colombia is not allowed to export meat to the U.S. The chips were distributed to retailers in Florida, New York, and other locations nationwide, and no cases of illness have been reported.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
