  • Heroes’ Village, Sarasota’s first affordable housing project for veterans located at 1539 25th St., is nearly finished and will welcome its first residents this summer.   • Sarasota County deputies responded to a home on the 300 block of Cowry Rd near Venice shortly after 11:30 p.m. on May 1 and found Leanna Leach shot to death—investigators are searching for a suspect.  FOX 13

  • CreArte Latino Cultural Center will host VOICES of Hidden Minds, a dramatized reading in Spanish with English surtitles from May 8 through May 10, 8 to 9:30 p.m. at its new home at 1913 Northgate Blvd. in Sarasota, and the production uses testimonials from Hispanic community members in Sarasota and Manatee counties to prompt a bilingual talkback—designed to spark conversation on mental health issues.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers passed a bill to tighten restrictions on dangerous dogs after a fatal 2022 attack that killed postal worker Pamela Jane Rock—owners must now carry $100,000 in liability insurance, microchip and confine their pets, and face fines for removing microchips intentionally. The legislation, known as the Pam Rock Act and awaiting Governor Ron DeSantis' signature, will take effect July 1 if signed.  Z105
