ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Sarasota County Sheriffs said a brush fire in a wooded area behind CVS at 4090 S. Tamiami Trail has led to the closure of Jacaranda Blvd between Tamiami Trail and Corso Venetia Blvd—officials stated the fire is contained and poses no threat to homes or businesses.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Atlas V rocket carrying Project Kuiper satellites for Amazon is scheduled to launch today at 7 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral — people in Sarasota may be able to see the launch if the weather holds.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dive Into Reading, a summer program from Anna Maria Oyster Bars in partnership with the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, is seeking volunteers to guide rising first-, second-, and third-graders from Title 1 schools at seven locations. The program will begin on June 2 and run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. until June 25 with online training starting Saturday.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • A Booker High School student died after a medical emergency on campus Friday — he was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where officials pronounced him deceased. Grief counselors are available on campus today as parents reported that the incident may have occurred during P.E. amid 90° heat.  ABC 7
