Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 24th, an SUV crashed into a home on Fruitville Road near Tuttle Avenue and crews worked to clear two closed westbound lanes on SR 780, causing major traffic delays with no injuries reported.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students from 29 schools will display art at the North County K-12 Spring Art Show from April 29 to May 10 at Art Center Sarasota as part of Sarasota County Schools’ Spring Art Show presented with the South County Art Show at the Venice Art Center. The exhibit offers awards for high school artists including scholarships and cash prizes from Ringling College of Art & Design, State College of Florida and local organizations.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium released two rehabilitated loggerhead turtles off Lido Beach on April 23 after treating them for red tide exposure near Sanibel Island and Siesta Key. The turtles, named Grimm and Monique, received PIT tags that will allow researchers to track their future movements.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Researchers at the University of South Florida found that a record Sargassum bloom in March stayed in the central Atlantic and is not expected to bring large seaweed landings to our coast — favorable currents and new satellite tools are keeping most of the algae away. Local agencies will use the improved forecasts to monitor any isolated wash-ups if weather conditions change.  Z105

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Parts of Nokomis Beach’s parking lot and the 200 block of South Casey Key Road will be closed starting April 28 for a long-term construction project to stage equipment and repair beach infrastructure—improving road safety—until Fall 2027.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Sarasota and Manatee counties saw more home sales and a drop in median prices for single-family homes while condo costs kept rising as inventories grew and hurricane damage increased seller pressure—local realtor Riga Rivera said uncertainty from higher interest rates and tariffs has made buyers more active and forced sellers to adjust their expectations. Out-of-state investors remain active in both markets as locals experience more choices and lower prices.  Sarasota Magazine
