Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 24th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Bakero (a European-style restaurant and bakery) opened in downtown Sarasota on Thursday, Apr. 23 at 1900 Main St, Suite 104, offering baked goods and sandwiches in a lively Main Street setting.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Driveway Drifters, a band that formed during the COVID pandemic, performs every Monday from October through April in The Landings near a local racquet club — neighbors gather with lawn chairs for live bluegrass, folk, and classic rock covers while also joining community events.  Observer
  • Two new exhibitions open at the Sarasota Art Museum, with Something Borrowed, Something New showcasing nearly 90 works from local collectors (and Maria A. Guzmán Capron: Penumbra featuring figurative textiles inspired by personal experiences) available until Sept. 27.  Sarasota Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new mapping report shows that Sarasota residents need 28 inches of rain in three months to end the drought, though forecasters say a tropical storm may be needed to beat wildfires and burn bans as the rainy season approaches mid-May.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sarasota City Commission will vote on a revised settlement for the 1260 N Palm Ave condo project on May 4— the updated plan includes new landscaping and a loading zone but still fails to meet zoning codes and neighborhood standards, prompting over 3,400 residents to urge opposition.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Customers at Publix in Sarasota may sample produce if they ask for help first, though eating more than a few items is treated as theft and can risk health (from pesticides and contamination). Employees cleanse or slice produce before serving to ensure safety.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sarasota clubs have not hosted pro golf since 2017 and are now focusing on amateur events, leaving locals to travel to nearby Lakewood Ranch for top-level tournaments. Renovations at key courses — a sign of efforts to keep quality high for future events — continue as clubs adjust their strategy.  Observer
