  • The Senior Friendship Center holds open houses in Sarasota and Arcadia today from noon-3 p.m. and in Venice on April 23 from 9 a.m.-noon to raise $100,000 in 24 hours through its Friendship Challenge - the fundraiser offers triple-match gifts for donations of $25-$500 from the Flanzer Philanthropic Trust.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Felicia Donson launched Mom’s Book Nook to honor her late mother Elaine Rothberg—a retired nurse at Sarasota Memorial Hospital—by donating 250 books to JFCS of the Suncoast to boost reading access for local youth.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Longboat Island Chapel held its Gather and Give drive on April 15 and donated enough shelf-stable food to fill three tubs along with a $3,000 check to support Stillpoint Mission as it helps local families with bill and food needs.  Observer
  • Residents at Paradise Center held a 70s-themed farewell party on April 16 where guests danced to classic hits and enjoyed vintage details. Residents at Longboat Harbour hosted a beach party on April 17 with pizza, live music and shared community stories as they celebrated the season's end.  Observer
  • Local groups in Sarasota announced key achievements and new hires as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties were named a Champion for Youth, Tidewell Foundation and Manatee Community Foundation welcomed fresh appointments, and Booker High School students received Cambridge awards. Sarasota architect Jonathan Parks was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows — highlighting local recognition — while Keller Williams named Nicole Gary agent for Bath and Racquet Residences and Animal Rescue Coalition welcomed a new clinic manager, marking a busy period for community institutions.  Sarasota Magazine

  • L.L.Bean will open its first Florida store on May 9 at University Town Center in Sarasota—located at 111 North Cattleman Road in a nearly 17,000-square-foot building. The store will host a two-day grand opening event featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m., offer $50 gift cards to the first 100 customers on each day, and donate $10,000 to support the Sarasota City YMCA.  Z105

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art launched its new Teen Guide Volunteer Training Program for teens aged 16 to 18, offering training in public speaking, art history, and leadership. The free, four-week program begins July 8 with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.+ applicants must submit their forms by May 15 and provide their own transportation.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Venice homeowner recorded two large alligators on her porch, one pressing its snout against the door, while a nearby incident saw an alligator force its way through a screen door into a home—authorities removed it without injury. Wildlife officials advise residents to secure screen doors and report aggressive wildlife to protect public safety.  Z105

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters of Sarasota County announced that former tax collector Barbara Ford-Coates will receive its inaugural Distinguished Public Service Award on April 26 for her four decades of service and department improvements. Arts Advocates also honored Hermitage Artist Retreat CEO Andy Sandberg with the Luminaire Award—accompanied by a $1,000 donation—to recognize his role in strengthening local arts partnerships.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
