  • Volunteers with Hope Seeds finished their final seed-packing event on April 13 at Christ Church of Longboat Key, surpassing a goal of 500,000 packets during the chapter’s 10th anniversary season. The local gathering featured live piano music and community conversations.  Observer
  • Community leaders held visioning sessions on Feb. 27 and April 13 at Mote Marine Laboratory to discuss flood mitigation, traffic control, and attracting upscale shops to St. Armands Circle. Future meetings will explore a retail study and other measures to lower investment risks (officials want balanced commercial growth).  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lyrids meteor shower reaches peak activity today as observers may see between 10 to 20 meteors per hour from midnight to dawn. Florida stargazers should find a dark spot away from city lights — many local areas are forecast clear.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Celestial events grace our sky now as the Eta Aquarids meteor shower runs from April 19 to May 28 and its peak comes May 5 to May 6 while the Lyrids reach peak activity today — local stargazers should head out between midnight and dawn for the best view.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • The second-annual Comedy Night took place on April 16 at Town Center Green in Longboat Key as part of Arts in April; five comedians (including returning performer Al Ernst and veteran Cliff Hornsby) entertained crowds while supporting the Garden Club's beautification projects.  Observer
  • Asolo Rep stages its first production of Fiddler on the Roof, where actors perform live music while retelling the classic story. The show runs through May 24 (directed by Peter Rothstein) and highlights local talent in a fresh presentation of the beloved musical.  Sarasota Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota County officials issued a burn ban yesterday due to severe drought and wildfire risk, banning all outdoor burning except for permitted cooking with barbecues & state-sanctioned burns. The ban will remain until the drought index stays below 500 for seven consecutive days.  FOX 13

  • Local restaurants are celebrating National Truffle Day on May 3 with affordable tasting menus showcasing dishes from truffle fries+steak with truffle butter.
