  • Lakewood Ranch High’s JROTC team won the state championship in orienteering at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey by beating over 350 competitors from 20 schools. AMI realtor Darcie Duncan will serve as Saturday’s Grand Marshal for the De Soto Grand Parade — Braden River Middle twins were honored as scholar-athletes and retirements at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office were announced.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Florence and the Spice Boys will open its second location at University Town Center in Sarasota on April 28—its 2,500-square-foot space seats about 160 and offers indoor-outdoor dining, a full-liquor bar, and daily specials. The restaurant began as a food truck in 2019—its first location in The Landings built a loyal following.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • City leaders will soon decide on the proposed Sarasota Performing Arts Center — a project modeled after the Ringling Museum and Selby Gardens that aims to boost local arts and support economic growth using TIF revenue, public funds and private donations.  Observer
  • Sarasota Jewish Theatre’s production of Joshua Harmon’s edgy comedy 'Bad Jews' sold out—its story features a funny family fight over a grandfather’s cherished chai necklace that brings up questions about Jewish identity and modern family ties. Director Gus Kaikkonen said the play uses humor and strong emotion to connect the audience with issues of heritage and change.  Observer

  • At Innovation Expo held April 10, Braden River Elementary set a learning stage when first graders shared their bee project—planting flowers and learning fun facts about bee stingers. The expo also featured projects on manatees, reading, entrepreneurship, and energy saving to link classroom work with real-world ideas.  Observer
  • Longtime band director Owen Bradley (with 35 years of experience) will guest conduct the Lakewood Ranch Wind Ensemble (during the April Showers and Serenades program) at Peace Presbyterian Church on April 27th. He said he is excited to lead the group and hopes to return for future guest conducting roles.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Tariffs on imported building materials will add over $9,200 to the cost of an average new single-family home and could push prices even higher for some builders, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Florida builders may slow new projects and trim renovations as higher costs affect home prices—making future plans less clear.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • IMG Academy Ascenders have hired Greg Studrawa—former LSU assistant coach and national champion—to serve as head football coach for their national team. He said his experience coaching at Ohio State, LSU, Maryland and in the European League of Football will guide the student-athletes as they work toward a national title.  ABC 7
