  • Homeless families with school-aged children in Sarasota-Manatee are facing tougher challenges as housing, childcare and transportation support shrink; numbers are now rising past pre-pandemic levels.   • Raymond Turner, a retired electrical engineer, has volunteered at Tara Elementary School since 2004 by tutoring two fifth grade classes in math to help students grasp challenging topics. He tutors every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.—a schedule that continues to support both students and teachers.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers are considering a bill that would require all private businesses to use the federal E-Verify system to check employee immigration status—House bill HB 955 has advanced through multiple committees while a stricter Senate version remains stalled. Senate leadership said there is plenty of time left in session as the legislature works toward potential changes by May 2.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Emilio Nava, a 23-year-old ranked 169th, won the men’s singles title at the Sarasota Open on Sunday at the Sarasota Sports Club, rallying to beat Liam Draxl 6-2, 7-6 (2).
