Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of April.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting April 16, Florida protects bats during their maternity season that lasts until August 14, making it illegal to remove them from homes or sheds without a permit. Homeowners in Sarasota are urged to address infestations soon (local wildlife experts advise using approved exclusion devices) to avoid trapping bat pups indoors (permits are available from the state).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax Day is coming on April 15 (just five days away) and many Sarasota restaurants are offering deals and freebies to help with tax filing. Eligible taxpayers may get up to $1,400 in a stimulus check when they file their 2021 return (Florida residents have until May 1 due to hurricane relief measures).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Sarasota city and county are planning budgets after costly storm recovery measures hurt their funds as FEMA delays reimbursement. The city spent over $17 million on recovery and used $9.4 million from reserves for park repairs that will finish by 2027 — both governments face fiscal challenges as they prepare for next year's budget.  Observer
  • Florida officials are urging drivers to put away distractions as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month — a campaign led by the FLHSMV and FHP — to help prevent crashes. Last year, nearly 300 people died and more than 2,200 were injured in crashes caused by distracted driving.  Z105

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A home at 1490 Hillview Drive in Harbor Acres sold for $14.8 million on March 10, making it the highest price paid so far for a home in Sarasota County this year. The house is under construction by Voigt Brothers and has 6,500 square feet, five bedrooms, 5.5 baths and 100 feet of waterfront along Sarasota Bay.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Ashley McLeod readied a young Riverview girls lacrosse team for the Class 2A-District 12 tournament, which began on April 10th—giving them the top seed after a rebuilding season. The team, led by freshmen Ella Berzins and Madison Muller, won two bounce-back games after a six-game losing streak and now hopes to win more in the postseason.  Observer
