- ➤ Wild Blue and Shellstone will unveil a new 13-acre park on April 12 from noon to 3 p.m. at 1000 Sandpoint Way in Lakewood Ranch. The joint project by Stock Development and Homes by Towne will offer sports courts, a kayak launch, trails, play areas and more—designed to serve communities growing to 505 and 684 homes. Observer

- ➤ Dean Dancer, a financial leader at Raymond James in Sarasota, said that Florida must improve math instruction for K-12 students because only 21% of eighth graders were proficient and a skilled workforce is needed for future jobs. He urged that training teachers & forming partnerships with businesses will give students key skills necessary for success. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ The Lakewood Ranch Garden Club will host Garden Fest at the Lakewood Ranch Library on April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the event will feature 50 vendors, four food trucks and craft activities for kids that teach local residents to protect monarch butterflies by planting milkweed. Educational speakers will explain Florida’s native and invasive plants and proper gardening techniques. Observer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Contractors lowered concrete beams on Clark Road on April 3 to build a new Legacy Trail overpass, and lane closures with detours will begin on Bee Ridge Road in mid-April to complete the $13.2 million project in June. County officials are accepting bids to widen a 1.4-mile section of the trail — construction will start this summer and finish in winter 2025 — to improve safety for all users. Observer
- ➤ Sarasota County restored the Historic Keith Farmhouse built in 1916 and held a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 2. The restored building will become an interpretive center that explains local history — from archaeology to native habitats. Observer
- ➤ After hurricanes Helene and Milton removed more than 400,000 cubic yards of sand, Longboat Key’s beaches remain flat and town officials are filing a FEMA claim to cover the loss—officials said there will be no major funding decisions for about six months—while they seek state funds to help restore the beaches to near their 2021 condition.
