COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 4, Siesta Key Village hosted an Easter Bunny event that drew children and families early with gift bags and giveaway baskets as local businesses donated treats (including nearly $600 worth from Beach Bazaar) to celebrate the season together.  Observer
  • The Humane Society of Sarasota County is holding a 24-hour online giving challenge to match every donation up to $100 & help homeless animals get much-needed care. Supporters can provide life-changing help for pets like Gideon and Pi.  Sarasota Magazine
  • The Tunnel to Towers Foundation will bring a 25-ft beam from the South Tower to Land O’Lakes at Let Us Do Good Village on May 17 and to Sarasota at Emma E. Booker Elementary School on May 19. Community members can view the tribute and hear firsthand 9/11 stories at both stops.  Z105

  • Blu Kouzina opened a new location at University Town Center on March 18, offering authentic Greek dishes made with fresh ingredients. The restaurant aims to create a family-like dining experience for East County patrons (locals appreciate its cozy ambiance).  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • First Sarasota Church hosted its annual Good Friday event at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, drawing thousands and featuring 50,000 Easter eggs (some dropped from a helicopter) along with inflatables, a rock climbing wall and a Good Friday Worship Service.  Observer
  • Pine View graduate Roger Zare’s new composition, 'Gamma' will be performed on April 12 at First Presbyterian Church by the DragonBoot Quartet. The piece, inspired by a mathematical constant, will debut at the Artist Series Concert & weave science into art.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The police department placed a memorial wreath (marking 51 years since his death) near officer Warren Jones’ photo at headquarters to honor his 1975 sacrifice. The department shared the tribute Monday on social media.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Herald-Tribune named Sarasota Christian’s Evan Poznanski as Boys Athlete of the Week for March 23–28 and published nominees for the following week covering March 30–April 3; local coaches submitted scores and stats to select athletes from baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and track, and voting ended at 10 a.m. Friday.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Nominees for the Herald-Tribune Girls Athlete of the Week contest for March 30 to April 4 were announced after county coaches submitted stats from games.
