- ➤ Yesterday at 8:30 a.m., 500 people took part in a 1-mile walk (with a 5K option) at Nathan Benderson Park to kick off efforts against summer hunger. All Faiths Food Bank (organizer) said that over 40,000 children in Sarasota and Desoto Counties will need help getting food this summer and will accept donations through May 15. ABC 7
- ➤ At Longboat Key’s 2025 Disaster Preparedness Seminar, town manager Howard Tipton and local weather experts said recent storms including Hurricane Helene caused serious damage and taught important lessons on protecting homes. - ➤ Former Florida Gator head coach Urban Meyer ended his five-day 'The Urban Edge' program at Booker High School—teaching players the five pillars of leadership, communication, fiscal responsibility, interpersonal skills, and career planning. - ➤ Suncoast Aqua Ventures will host its eighth annual Reef and Beach Cleanup — at Sea Breeze Park on 55 Horseshoe Loop Road in Terra Ceia — starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 5th, and Sunday, April 6th; certified divers, boat owners and land lovers are invited to help remove trash from the coast and shallow waters. - ➤ After 41 months of planning, Bay Park Conservancy canceled plans for the Sunset Pier when Army Corps requirements raised costs by $20 million – increasing the project price to $35 million. The organization will reallocate those funds while continuing Phase 2 improvements such as seawall rehabilitation and new green spaces. Observer
- ➤ Today, Sarasota County launched its new garbage collection process for unincorporated areas as residents use an online map to find their collection day while North Port, Sarasota, and Venice keep their current schedule. The county ended a 20-year partnership with Waste Management and now contracts with Waste Pro for the North District and FCC Environmental Services for the South District—recycling and yard waste guidelines remain unchanged.
