- ➤ Urban Meyer has launched a youth program called The Urban Edge with the Sarasota Police Department to help sophomore and junior Booker High football players learn essential skills in leadership, communication, fiscal responsibility, interpersonal skills, and career planning. Meyer and the police spent six months planning the program, which will run through July to provide students with job shadowing opportunities—real steps toward a better future. ABC 7

- ➤ Gulf of Mexico Drive reopened at 8:10 a.m. on Thursday after a two-vehicle accident at 5:15 a.m. near Sloop Lane (no injuries were reported) when a semi-truck collided with a pickup truck at a construction site. Observer

- ➤ L.L. Bean is opening its first Florida store at University Town Center at 111 North Cattlemen Road in Sarasota—expected to open the first week of May, the 17,000 square foot location will replace the former Bed Bath and Beyond and offer warm-weather clothing and accessories with about 30 employees. The company will also tour the region with its Bootmobile from March 29 through April 5 to introduce its products to local customers. Observer

- ➤ Sarasota man Victor Lamar Orr, 30, led a chase through four counties in 2022 and was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in Tampa on Thursday after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and firearm charges—deputies recovered drugs and a Glock pistol during his pursuit. ABC 7
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Dom and Vince Marino founded Oyster Boys Conservation to collect donated oyster shells and build vertical oyster gardens—called VOGs—to filter water and help restore Sarasota Bay. The nonprofit hosts hands-on workshops and works with local seafood restaurants—key partners in their shell sourcing—to expand its efforts. Observer

- ➤ Two years after Lucy Fernandez died in a boating accident, her parents introduced Lucy’s Law—House Bill 289—to boost boating safety in Florida. The bill passed unanimously on Wednesday and will require boaters who have lived in Florida less than five years to complete a safety course and face higher penalties for reckless boating. ABC 7
- ➤ U.S. Reps. Vern Buchanan and Darren Soto introduced a bill that would let local governments use FEMA disaster funds to fight red tide blooms— the proposed law adds harmful algal blooms to the list of disasters eligible for technical and financial help as communities deal with its effects on marine life and coastal waters.
