Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longboat Key Garden Club hosted its ninth Dinner and a Movie fundraiser Friday night at Bayfront Park—where community members watched Top Gun: Maverick, enjoyed a meal from Chef Caldwell's, and joined a live auction—to raise funds for post-hurricane restoration and beautification projects. Proceeds will support work on parks and the town hall.  Observer

CRIME NEWS

  • Sarasota police reported a nearly 22% drop in crimes at the end of 2024 as Chief Troche credited almost 200 officers, new technology, 2,700 arrests, and 245 firearms removed—he hopes to boost the team as the city grows.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has raised 82% of the $60.9 million needed for Phase Two, which will add a hurricane-resilient conservatory, a learning pavilion and expanded gardens. The project will break ground by the end of 2025 and finish in 2027 (total funds have topped $114 million largely through private donations).  Sarasota Magazine
  • Azara Ballet uses dance to address screen addiction in its second season final performance '7 Hours,' choreographed by co-founder Martin Flowers—cellphones serve as props to show how technology can disconnect people. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • From March 18 to 20, Longboat Key Fire Rescue practiced vehicle extrication techniques using the Hurst Jaws of Life in a simulated single-vehicle crash to learn how to safely remove a victim.
