BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe's has recalled 61,500 bottles of Gerolsteiner 750ml Sparkling Water due to potential bottom cracks that could cause cuts—affected bottles have lot numbers 11/28/2024 L and 11/27/2024 L and were sold from December to January. Customers should stop using these bottles and return them for a full refund, with no injuries reported.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • North Port resident Selina Sinner continues to struggle to pay rent and support her 1-year-old and 3-year-old sons after her fiancée, Zachary Lucas, was killed in a shooting by his close friend Michael Reinel, who will face a second-degree murder charge at his arraignment on March 21 as she lacks life insurance or survivor benefits.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Sarasota and Manatee counties are in the midst of spring break from March 17 to 21—schools closed and many local events and travel tips support students and families—with district contacts available for updates.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 17 the National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory for a non-tropical low pressure system 700 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands that did not develop because of dry air and upper-level winds — local officials urge Sarasota residents to start preparing by checking homes and assembling their disaster supply kits before hurricane season begins on June 1.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • The high school sports roundup from March 17–22 showed that Parrish won 12-1 over Palmetto as Alex Tallo hit a home run and Wesley Anderson pitched well, and Community School beat Riverview 20-10 in girls lacrosse. Sarasota Christian also won in tennis with a 4-3 victory in boys tennis and a 6-1 win in girls tennis at Arlington Park.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
