Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 18th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • All Faiths Food Bank honored more than 3,000 volunteers in 2024 after they contributed over 54,500 hours by helping with food sorting, packing, mobile and school pantry distributions and administrative tasks at its Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. The event recognized individual efforts (including Regina Leach and Giovanni Delli Carpini) and the food bank will soon seek more volunteers for outdoor food distributions from May through September.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota County announced that Ted Sperling Park at South Lido has reopened after damage from a series of hurricanes including Debby, Helene — and Milton last year. Crews from Sarasota Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources worked with volunteers and contractors to clear storm debris.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Sarasota Police are now in charge of finding 27-year-old Felicia Adams who has been missing since August from the Resurrection House—her mother said disagreements over jurisdiction among three agencies delayed the report because Adams is homeless and struggles with addiction.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Over the next three months, many concerts and comedy shows will take place in Tampa Bay and Sarasota as top acts like Fred Armisen, AC/DC and Metallica are scheduled to perform in April, May and June — offering live music and stand-up that spans rock, country and metal. Local venues such as Raymond James Stadium and MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre will host the events, and plans may change as dates approach.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit Sarasota County uses its Tourist Development Tax—a 6% fee on short-term stays paid solely by visitors—to fund tourism promotions and community projects such as beach maintenance, sports venues, and arts initiatives. The agency noted that these funds helped drive nearly 3 million visitors and provided residents with significant tax savings.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and local officials say residents should prepare by securing homes, checking emergency kits, and staying aware after last year three hurricanes hit, with two being major. Daily tropical weather updates will be provided once the season starts—so residents are urged to keep alerts on and follow safety tips.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gamma Xi Boulé will host Black Men's Health Screening Day on Saturday from 10 am until 1 pm at 1825 Dr. Martin Luther King Way in Sarasota—offering free check-ups and health talks led by Sarasota Memorial Newtown providers.
