  • At the Sarasota County Fair — running March 13–22 — local students show agricultural skills and enjoy carnival rides, while third-grader Merida McKeehan proudly presents her pig Rusty after diligent care.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sarasota residents are invited to vote for the best local pizza restaurant in a Sweet 16 bracket (voting begins today until Thursday, Mar. 19 and continues with Elite Eight and championship rounds through April 9), with the winner to be announced on April 13.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local educators are launching a filmmaking program to help aspiring storytellers master film techniques. The initiative will offer hands-on lessons at a community facility in Sarasota (details to follow).  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longboat Key police will increase patrols during spring break to check for rule violations and parking issues — officers will use boats and ATVs to monitor beaches and parking areas while handing out pamphlets to educate visitors.  Observer
  • On Sunday, despite TSA officers working without pay due to a partial government shutdown during busy spring break travel, Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) reported 0-15 minute wait times while MCO in Orlando hosted a food drive for its workers, which continues today. Travelers should allow extra time when flying.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Maso is a new reservation-only restaurant—located at Merchants Pointe Shopping Center 2881 Clark Road—that offers 26 seats in its main dining area and a private room for 10 with a menu featuring filet mignon, Iberian pork secreto, and more.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Indianapolis-based developer Milhaus plans a 231-unit apartment complex at 2750 Tallevast Road featuring a resort-style pool, pickleball courts and a fitness center. It is located five minutes from the airport and near a new Wahlburgers.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sarasota Sailors lost 53-50 to Columbus in the FHSAA Class 7A state boys basketball final on March 14; the team fought hard throughout the game and took home the runner-up trophy.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • South Florida will face Louisville in the NCAA tournament Round of 64 on Thursday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern in Buffalo, New York (TNT will broadcast the game) with tickets starting at $110.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
