  • FDOT installed eight permanent asphalt speed tables near crosswalks at St. Armands Circle along John Ringling Boulevard & N. Boulevard of the Presidents overnight to slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety, with striping scheduled to finish by the end of March.  Observer

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • MacDill Air Force Base confirmed that three airmen were lost when a KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed over western Iraq on Mar. 12 — all six service members died and an investigation is underway.  ABC 7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Friday, many Florida metro areas reported a small drop in regular gasoline prices following a historic coordinated oil reserve release, though prices remain up 83 cents on average since the Iran war began and diesel costs keep rising.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its Youth Leadership Sarasota program class of 2027, a 10-month experience for rising high school juniors and seniors to gain leadership skills and community service hours. Applicants must apply by June 5.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Manatee Fire Rescue held its annual Wave for Water Safety event Saturday morning at Manatee Public Beach to remind beachgoers to keep a close eye on swimmers as lifeguards extended coverage for growing crowds (nearly 300,000 more people visited beaches last year).  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sarasota High fell short of its first state championship when Columbus defeated them 53-50 on Saturday at UNF Arena. Junior guard Johnny Lackaff led with 27 points but missed a crucial 3-pointer in the final seconds.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
