  • ABC7 honored Sarasota resident Richard Charles Ladny, a Marine Corps veteran who served from 1958 to 1961 and earned a Good Conduct Award (for his work as a naval gun fighter and med crew trainer). His proud son said he lived a model Marine Life, and after his service he ran a motel on US 41 with his wife.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • A 14-year-old student at Lakewood Ranch High School was arrested Thursday after making online threats about a school shooting; a tip from Fortify FL and Snapchat posts (indicating a plan for March 14) led officers to detain him and charge him with written threats to kill and disrupting a school event.  ABC 7
  • A unity mural titled Unity in Sarasota’s Rosemary District was defaced with a swastika and the words Free Palestine—prompting police to canvass the area while community leaders urge residents to work together against hate.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • A North Port woman was charged with assault on law enforcement and two counts of child abuse after her children were found living in filthy conditions—neighbors said the children sought help when locked out and police reported she threatened officers by brandishing a gun.  ABC 7

  • Tonight, Sarasota residents can see a total lunar eclipse that starts just before midnight at 11:57 p.m. and the moon will turn red by 2:58 a.m.—if the sky stays mostly clear, weather may change the view.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
