  • The new Nordstrom Rack store will open March 19 at 9 a.m. at Sarasota Pavilion on S. Tamiami Trail — the 27,000 sqft off-price space is part of Nordstrom’s retail division offering discounted fashions.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local residents in Sarasota have multiple St. Patrick’s Day events scheduled, including a block party on March 14 at 1490 Main St. & festive pub gatherings, family events and themed menus on March 17 at venues such as Shamrock Pub and Main Street Lakewood Ranch.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Country Club artist Gail Cristello, who discovered her passion for painting later in life, will be a featured artist at the Creative Arts Association Spring Art Show and Sale on March 14 at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall.   • Gas prices for regular have risen almost 36 cents per gallon since March 2 in Sarasota, AAA data shows. Experts expect prices to rise 10 to 30 cents more as seasonal demand and global tensions keep markets uncertain.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Tuesday night, the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County hosted a panel discussion in Venice on school funding challenges, including teacher releases and a voucher program (diverting $45 million for 8,000 students) that is straining public school budgets.  ABC 7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hummingbirds are beginning their spring migration as ruby-throated birds are seen across Florida. Residents can attract these birds by planting tubular flowers or setting out feeders now with homemade nectar (1 part sugar to 4 parts water) to enjoy the migration season.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Sarasota lab agreed to pay $980,000 in a settlement after paying a marketing service for Medicare referrals — its payment for lab tests between Jan 2 and June 15, 2023 raised false claims under federal law. The company self-disclosed the issue to resolve the violation.  ABC Action News
  • The Senate slowed plans to transfer USF Sarasota-Manatee by deleting the campus shift from HB 5601 on Monday—halting proposals to move facilities and $22.47 million in recurring funding to New College. Lawmakers will try to reconcile differences in conference before the session ends.  Sarasota Magazine
