COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Curran Foundation began its Florida chapter in Lakewood Ranch by awarding three grants to local nonprofits in Manatee and Sarasota counties to support children’s education, athletics and health. It will give away $250,000 by year’s end as it builds community partnerships.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reel Equals Film Festival will run March 5-10 at Ringling College of Art and Design, the Sarasota Art Museum and online to showcase films on motherhood and mental health. Screenings include 'Hello, Mother' and '24 Days Without You,' and Anxiety Club opens with a filmmaker Q&A.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USF Sarasota-Manatee and New College of Florida remain separate as each school receives federal funding for key projects—a Center for Entrepreneurship at USF and a greenway trail at New College—with Rep. Vern Buchanan saying this plan meets our community's diverse educational needs.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City staff reported that 14,000 gallons of raw wastewater spilled into Sarasota Bay at Ringling Causeway Park Monday morning due to a shifted concrete vault (likely from soil erosion during hurricane season) and they clamped the break, applied lime, and began cleanup while taking water samples.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Olympic success has spurred youth hockey in Sarasota and Manatee counties as teams like the Sarasota Ice Rays and Lakewood Ranch High gain local attention. A public-private agreement for a new rink at Premier Sports Campus North may expand ice access soon.  Observer
  • Braden River High wrestling will send eight wrestlers to state championships from March 5-7 at Silver Spurs Arena (in Kissimmee), matching their program’s record from last season.  Observer
