COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Suncoast Stars Community held its second annual Stride to Thrive 5K/1 mile Walk and Family Fun Fest on Feb. 28 at Grace Community Church, where participants ran, walked, and rolled in support of programs for adults with disabilities. The nonprofit, founded by Mary Lou and Bob Fenton in 2022, now operates at Tabernacle Church. Observer
- ➤ On Feb. 28, church volunteers built 30 beds for children in need at Church of the Redeemer. They gave 26 beds to families at Alta Vista Elementary and 4 to The Azinger Family Compassion Center — marking the project’s fifth year. Observer
- ➤ Today the full moon — known as the Worm Moon — will coincide with the only total lunar eclipse of 2026; Florida residents can see the Earth’s shadow begin at 3:44 a.m. ET and the blood moon peak at 6:38 a.m. ET. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ The Town Green will host a Community Open House on Saturday, March 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Town Center Green on Bay Isles Road, featuring over 30 local groups, food trucks + a bounce house and live music. Observer

- ➤ On March 1, a force main breach at West John Ringling Causeway Park caused nearly 14,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to spill into Sarasota Bay over almost five hours, and city crews installed a repair clamp and vacuumed the spill for proper disposal. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Silver Alert was issued on March 1 for 79-year-old Charles Deeds from Auburndale after he was last seen on Holiday Lane wearing a flannel polo and khaki pants; he may be in a 2003 white Chevrolet Suburban (showing a damaged right rear fender and American flag) in the Tampa area, and authorities urge anyone with details to call FDLE. - ➤ A scaled-back design for a new performing arts center with parking was presented to city commissioners Monday to replace the storm-damaged Van Wezel. The Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation will refine plans, seek city funding, and host a meeting at Lefty's Oyster (Mar. 12) to keep momentum. FOX 13
- ➤ The 46th Sarasota Jazz Festival runs from March 9-14 and features top acts including Sammy Figueroa and John Pizzarelli at venues such as the Municipal Auditorium and FST. The Jazz Club of Sarasota plans to open a new 300-seat venue plus a smaller space to feature local artists by 2035. Sarasota Magazine

- ➤ On Thursday, Mote Marine Laboratory released rehabilitated sea turtles Little Buoy and Spud into the Gulf following months of care. Volunteers from Longboat Key Turtle Watch helped wheel the turtles onto the beach where Little Buoy immediately swam off and Spud recovered from cold stunning. Observer

- ➤ Florida’s Road Rangers provide free roadside assistance on major highways by changing flat tires, jump-starting batteries and refueling vehicles. Motorists in Sarasota can call *FHP on 347 for help and must follow the Move Over law when passing service vehicles. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Cooper Pote, a sophomore utility player at The Out-of-Door Academy, was named East County Athlete of the Week after posting a .333 average with seven hits and six RBIs during wins over Booker and Bradenton Christian. Observer
- ➤ Voters submitted ballots for the Herald-Tribune Boys Athlete of the Week poll sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network (CFBHN) for Feb. 23-28 following last week's win by Sarasota Military Academy wrestler Manuel Ramirez. - ➤ On March 2, the Herald-Tribune invited readers to vote online for the Girls Athlete of the Week for Feb. 23-28 after coaches in Sarasota and Manatee submitted game stats. - ➤ From April 16-19, 2026, The Concession Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch will host the Senior PGA Championship, marking the first major professional golf tournament in Florida in over 25 years.
