ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A barn on Crestwood Road in Englewood caught fire on Feb. 7, causing extensive damage while no animals were injured (electrical issues were identified as the cause).  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sarasota Orchestra will perform Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring & Joan Tower’s 1920/2019 from February 27 to March 1 at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall as music director Giancarlo Guerrero leads the program with returning guest Benjamin Beilman adding a local touch.  Sarasota Magazine
  • FSU/Asolo Conservatory students present two plays (Wolf at the Door and Exit, Pursued by a Bear) that explore how women reclaim their identities amid domestic abuse at the Jane B. Cook Theatre. The productions run through March 7 and provide a fresh take on personal liberation.  Observer
  • Booker High alum LaMichael Leonard Jr. returns to Sarasota to debut his work-in-progress, 'Hot, New Dance' at The Ringling’s Historic Asolo Theater on Feb. 19. The sold-out event, featuring international talent and local collaborators (with a waiting list for future shows), marks his celebrated homecoming.  Observer
  • Sarasota Orchestra music director Giancarlo Guerrero conducted young string players during Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show with pop star Bad Bunny. He celebrated the historic blend of classical and Hispanic music — marking the first time a classical musician has joined the halftime show since 2016.  ABC 7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report from Senior Friendship Centers showed that home-based care for seniors can save $123 million in taxpayer costs and generate $153 million in local economic activity; the group met with lawmakers from Jan. 25-29 and requested $790,000 for capital improvements plus a 10% statewide funding boost for community care.  Sarasota Magazine

  • At Wilkinson Elementary's STEAM Night on Feb. 5, students enjoyed hands-on science with activity stations, exotic cars, and healthy sodas — partnerships with Lamborghini Sarasota and Steel Supplements boosted the event's engaging mission.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Buttonwood Harbour saw preliminary 60% stormwater improvement plans on Feb. 5 — the project will add 15 inlets, raise roads, and regrade drainage ditches to reduce flooding. A second meeting is scheduled on March 26 before plans are finalized, with construction set for fiscal years 2027 and 2028.  Observer

  • Today, the Baltimore Orioles opened a new (47,700 sqft) player development complex at Ed Smith Stadium that offers advanced training spaces, a nutrition center, and a biomechanics lab ahead of spring training.  ABC 7
