  • Longboat Library hosts its book sale on Feb. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the library lawn, offering books for $1 and $2 with proceeds benefiting Save Our Seabirds; if weather is poor, the sale moves to Feb. 15 while lunch comes from The Maine Line food truck.  Observer

  • Local farmers in Sarasota are spraying water on their strawberry crops as freezing nights approach — a method that uses latent heat from ice formation to keep the fruit safe from internal damage.  ABC 7
  • Mote Marine Laboratory researchers are studying a shark deterrent device that sends an electronic pulse every two seconds to help fishermen keep sharks from their bait in local waters. Trials show the device cuts shark interactions significantly & testing continues to explore a stronger pulse for improved results.  FOX 13
