COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reed Medical Group and Longboat Key Fitness held their grand reopening celebrations on Jan. 22 at The Shoppes of Bay Isles. The events featured ribbon cuttings, equipment demos, and community festivities that promise expanded local services.  Observer
  • Manatee County partnered with 24-Hour Pet Connect to launch an interactive pet database that lets residents scroll through a digital map + photos and icons to track lost pets. Officials say owners should continue microchipping to help identify their animals.  ABC 7
  • Goodwill Manasota Veterans Services offers job training and employment support for veterans, as detailed at a Jan. 20 Rotary meeting at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church (which received $13,100 in local donations). The program helps veterans overcome barriers like PTSD and financial challenges.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sarasota Concert Association hosts a free Music Matinee series through April at St. Andrew United Church of Christ - a monthly event featuring guest artist George Nickson from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The next performance is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 6908 S. Beneva Road.  ABC 7
  • The Music Matinee Series began in Sarasota on Monday, Jan. 26 (featuring live performances by local musicians) and will continue with weekly shows at select venues. The series is set to celebrate local talent and engage the community.  ABC 7
  • Thunder By The Bay Music and Motors Festival returns to Sarasota Fairgrounds Feb. 13-15. This 28th annual fundraiser for Suncoast Charities for Children will feature Night Ranger, 38 Special (main stage at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14) and Montgomery Gentry, plus a meet-and-greet with Paul Teutul Jr. on Feb. 14.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Baby Fox Academy highlighted the importance of quality early learning; owner Laurie McCracken explained that strong programs shape a child's future. The Children's Movement of Florida designated Jan. 26 as (All in for Early Learning Day) to spotlight educators and spur calls for better pre-kindergarten funding.  ABC Action News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TikTok is now under American majority control after a deal finalized on Jan. 22, but it remains banned on government devices and school networks in Florida. Lawmakers say no plans to lift the ban are under discussion during the current legislature session ending March 13.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Florida officials launched a new animal cruelty registry on Monday, Jan. 26 to help law enforcement track abusers and protect pets. Local agencies will use the registry to support efforts in keeping animals safe.  ABC 7
  • Sarasota City Commission unanimously approved a resolution on Jan. 19 to oppose federal plans for offshore oil and gas leasing that could reverse the current drilling moratorium. The ruling unites the city with other local jurisdictions to protect coastal economies, fisheries and tourism.  Observer
